According to Stats Canada the average Canadian adult spends nearly 10 hours per day in a chair, roughly seven of which are at work. Not only can this lead to physical discomfort, it is also associated with health issues like heart disease, obesity, and anxiety.
Here are 6 ways to stay active at work:
· Park farther away-Avoid the temptation of finding the closest parking space. If you take transit, try getting off at a stop early and walking the rest of the way.
· Take the stairs-If you work in a building with multiple floors, take the stairs whenever possible.
· Schedule mini-movement breaks-stand up every 30 minutes and stand up when you take calls. Stand at the back of the room for lengthy presentations.
· Stretch- a few times each day, take a short break for light stretching. Here are some recommended stretches from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety
· Consider an adjustable desk-switching back and forth between sitting and standing can help reduce fatigue and soreness.
· Grab a buddy-if it works, switch to a walking meeting with a colleague instead. Walking at lunch with a friend or colleague can make it more enjoyable too.
